Update for August 25, 2009
Just want to remind people to please come out to our Welcome Home Party for Okili this Friday Aug. 28. Although we are much relieved that he is home, the struggle still continues. I, Sabrina, am constantly reminded that my kids and I do not have the same rights as other American citizens. We do not have the right to our husband and father as other American's have. We do feel a spiritual confidence that things will go our way, but the truth is, there is NO real law in place to ensure us that everything will go as we need it to in the legal system.
LEGAL STATUS
Currently Okili is protected by the Class Action Law Suit that he applied for. They will be issuing him a temporary work permit while it is pending. Because this application could be denied, we are also simultaneously making a motion to open up his old case, the one in which they actually picked him up in front of our house on the 25 year old overstay of student visa. Even this is not guaranteed that a judge will agree to open up the old case, but we are counting on the fact that since we've been a family now for over 20 years (married for 22 years), we have a strong reason for a judge to open the old case.
At this time, the government is not recognizing our family at all, or the fact that he's actually been in some sort of legal status during most of his life (27 years) in America. So the legal struggle is still continuing, though some people have had the misconception that it's all over now, and he's finally free. Now that he's home, he needs your support more than ever to finally reach the freedom we need for our family to stay safely together. After having to let go of the first lawyer in AZ due to a variety of costly and other reasons, we now have a more local lawyer working for us thankfully, low bono, Ms. Florence M. Ndedi of Oakland, CA.
More Radio Shows coming up and just had one:

A few new "Thank Yous" to add
Robert Evans (Rollo Productions) has been an amazing support for stage and time-line management. Robert is one of those awesome helpful people with a little expertise in many areas, in fact if you ever need building / construction help - he's the man. You could reach him at 707-236-7973 (I got his permission for that).
Amy Trussell - Thanks for coming through with helping to get some of the food donations. It's been really awesome. Looks like we'll definitely have some amazing salad lined up.
Richard Erickson of Chai Baba Chai - Thank you for the second time to make the amazing Ginger African inspired beans (and don't forget the yummy garnishes!) and for taking on supervising servers in the kitchen this time; also for the generous donations of the Chai Baba Chai spiced Tea!
ABOUT THANK YOUS In General
I know that I've ventured out onto the branch of saying thank you to everyone. I've made many thank you's to folks, and as I do that I realize there may always be someone who's missed. Please know that if we've not thanked you formally, we already really really thank you, tremendously! If you especially would like a formal thank you (publically), please let us know. If you've written a check to us, or are on my email list, I most likely have your name and really really appreciate you. Some people don't want their names listed in a big public Thank You. Okili feels obliged to make a huge list of Thanks you's to hang at the Welcome Home Event. If you want to ensure your name is there or not there please let us know, giving the full name. Regardless, you know who you are, and know that you are a wonderfully appreciated part of this community effort.
Update for August 21, 2009
First I'd also like to mention that tomorrow we will be on the air on KBBF with Amy Contardi (89.1 FM) at 1:00 Pm. Please listen in!
Along those lines, I'd also like to ad a GREAT BIG Thank you to Elbert "Big Man" Howard of Jazz Styles on KBBF. He has also been promoting our event and speaking about Okili's situation, and the issue of Police abuse of power, in general period, and I'd failed to mention him below. "Big Man", in case you aren't aware, is one of the original co-founding members of the Black Panther party, of Oakland in 1966, and now resides in Sonoma county. He is also the president of PACH (Police Accountability Clinic and Helpline), which is an issue close to our hearts.
Initially, when we first had our FREE OKILI event, Big Man was planning to read a speech that he' especially been moved to write based on an intuitive feeling he'd had awaking him in the middle of the night. Unfortunately, with all of our last minute, quick organizing (by incredible volunteers trying to do their best) his call to the stage was missed, although he'd attended the event. We've invited him to attend our upcoming welcome home party, and hope he can make it.
BACKGROUND OF PACH
PACH grew out of an idea that was born in the wake of a spate of killings which occurred in Sonoma County at the hands of law enforcement officers. Most of these victims were young men of color and/or in mental crisis. Because the community’s needs/demands for satisfactory explanations and/or responses from law enforcement agencies and city officials were not addressed and/or were largely ignored, a group of concerned citizens and community activists got together and formed a coalition, which eventually held a community meeting, from which came the idea for PACH.PACH, was formed to provide education and assistance to the community of Sonoma County by collecting, organizing, and cataloguing information about allegations of police abuse and misconduct.PACH is made up of a group of concerned volunteers, who collect information from people who feel that they have been mistreated by law enforcement officers, whether they are city police, sheriff’s deputies, CHP, or ICE agents (Immigration and Customs). Community members are encouraged to call the PACH phone line at 707-542-7224 (707-542-PACH) or they may also submit, in writing, their concerns, queries, or reports of incidents by mail to: PACH 719 Orchard Street, Santa Rosa, CA 95404.
Also wanted to let you all know that we just had a very nice little interview with Kris Welch's show "Living Room" on KPFA. It is not yet in the archives but probably will be by tonight or tomorrow. Here is their website and page for archives for Aug. 21: KPFA Archives for Friday, August 21st 2009 | KPFA 94.1 FM Berkeley: Listener Sponsored Free Speech Radio.
Now we have a longer list of Media support to thank which I listing here again. A big Thank You to Barry Chertov for donating the post of our Flyer for our event Aug. 28, which should be up shortly. Thank you Barry!

Update for August 19, 2009
Volunteers Still Needed for August 28th Welcome Home Party and Fundraiser
Time is getting VERY CLOSE to the date of Aug. 28, 2009! We are really excited, but there are things that still need to be done! We need help. Please see the fundraisers page for details. Thanks!
Update for August 16, 2009
Here's an article in the Bohemian that came out. There's a little typo inside that says our welcome home party is Friday the 29th, and it's actually Friday the 28th of Aug.
http://www.bohemian.com/bohemian/08.12.09/blast-0932.html#
Update for August 13, 2009
We are very excited to have a chance to interview tomorrow on Flashpoints with Dennis Bernstein at 5:00PM. KPFA is 94.1 on your dial. The interview is also with Peter Phillips the Director of Project Censored. We feel that the issue of USCIS and their relationship with the Prison Industrial Complex is very suspect....no wonder the schools have no money. Do you know the private prison gets about $150 per day for each day a prisoner is detained? Gives them a good reason to keep them there unless you can find them a good reason to let you out (like Okili started costing them, etc.....)
Update for August 12, 2009
Just a further update: We went to see Lynn Woolsey yesterday (for about 15 min.) and it was a positive meeting as she agreed to write a letter of support for us. We must write what we want and then they will put it into their own words. We are so happy about that, finally.
Also, Okili and I would like to add a very special thank you to Robin Silver of Archer Audio who is so graciously donating his time to us to do all the sound at our Welcome Home Party on Aug. 28. Robin is a highly professional sound man who for many years (over 10?) has been running sound on stages at Health and Harmony / Harmony festival, at Earthdance, Reggae on the River, Sol Fest, and many more. Thank you so much Robin. You can check out his website at ArcherAudio.com.
And finally, don't forget, we'll be on Dennis Bernstein's FLASHPOINTS on KPFA this Friday! And coming up a little later next week, an interview on Kris Welch's LIVING ROOM (also on KPFA) - we'll confirm the time and date on that.
Update for August 10, 2009
Since Okili got back home on July 17, 2009, we've been just so happy that he's home. Okili is working around the house like crazy getting all his things in order. He'd been right in the middle of so many projects when he was seized by the ICE officers that April 20th morning. He's really happy to be back with his various enterprises and endeavors. We really want to take a healing break with our family somewhere on a remote island vacation location, but we still have work to do to ensure our freedom of movement around the world as citizens of it. We really have a message to get out about the learning experiences we've all had with this immigration ordeal.
For one, I Sabrina, have had a very intense learning experience; I've been moved to tears by how our beautiful communities were able to come together to help us the way they did. The support we received during the FREE OKILI event on May 22, was overwhelmingly the message of the mass spirit of love and determination talking through all of us. This is really what a community is all about; many parts making up the a whole; just like the ocean, the universe, the macrocosm and microcosm speaking as one. And we are connected and joined by many different communities independent of one another and yet becoming a greater part of the whole as they are actually intertwined with one another like twisting vines, as nature is our role model.
We cannot accomplish this without you; we all need one another, and must not forget to continue to ask for what we need of one another. We speak in a mass voice and we are heard - we hear one another; the community hears us; the world hears us. We have a message.
In addition to working on the case to legalize my husband from home, there is a greater message we have learned and want to expose; that of the prison industrial complex and it's relationship to ICE and Homeland security. Okili has stories to tell, and I have insights about all of this. It is a lot to write, and one day I hope to have the time to do it. Or perhaps the right people will interview us to collect the information properly.
New Lawyer
Finally we can speak about our new lawyer. During all of this ordeal, when it became clear that we would need to change lawyers, we really didn't want to speak about it too much on line as it felt like a sensitive subject. But now we are happy to announce our new lawyer Ms. Florence M. Ndedi who's offices are located in Oakland CA. Her contact information is:
Ndedi Florence Law Office
2820 19th Ave
Oakland, CA 94606-3304
(510) 533-5767
Meeting w/ Congress Woman Lynn Woolsey Aug. 11
We've been on the waiting list to meet with Lynn Woolsey. Even though I was told that her office could do nothing to help us, as a constituent of Lynn's for probably the last 20 years in all of her political positions, I did not give up. I insisted on getting on the waiting list for an interview. Just last week I got a call that they had a cancellation for an apt. today. Even though it's only 15 minutes or less, we took the appointment. Initially I thought I'd bring a whole crowd in with me, but they seemed a bit concerned with knowing exactly who and how many were coming in, so I just kept it simple. I will be presenting to her all of our case; our marriage certificate, petition of signatures, other letters of affidavit, his receipts for membership to the class action law suit (NWIRP vs USCIS), and other immigration filings, and anything else we think of. She will have all her own copies to keep. We will be asking her for an affidavit of support or some such letter.
PUBLICITY / RADIO INTERVIEW SCHEDULE
So far we've already had an interview on KRCB's Northbay Report with Bruce Robinson, and just today with Emmanuel Nado of San Jose's KKUP "voices of Africa" Program.
We just set up an apt. with Dennis Bernstein on KPFA's Flashpoints, for this FRIDAY, Aug. 14, at 4:30 PM (show starts at 5). YES!!
This SUNDAY Night, Aug. 16, at about 9:00 PM during David Sharp's Music International Program (world music program featuring a lot of African stuff) on KBBF, we will be calling in to interview, and have also arranged to have Amadou Camara play live on the show, a preview of his playing for the Welcome Home Party. Listen to David's whole show from 8 - 10 PM Sunday.
SATURDAY August 22, at 1:00 PM we will also be on KBBF's woman's voices with Amy Contardi doing an in depth interview (I think it's a full hour).
MONDAY. August 24, we will again interview with Emmanuel Nado on San Jose's KKUP's "voices of Africa" program, 4:30 PM.
TUESDAY, August 25 we will come on again with Amy Contardi on KRCB, at 10:00 PM probably also interviewing with one of the musicians that will perform at the Welcome Home Party (still to be determined).
We also intend to interview on Guerneville's low power station KGGV with John Chapman (a.k.a. "Milo) and we're open to more interviews with anyone else, including Newspapers! (I've been waiting to hear back from Bleys Rose of the Press Democrat, and Gretchen Giles and Lindsay Pyle of the Bohemian who all did great stories for us last May. We need updates now.) Something may show up in a wonderful publication called SF Bay View. Does any one know someone I can contact form the Sonoma West Times and News?
SUPPORT IS STILL NEEDED
Although we have accomplished allot, we are not through with this yet. We still have a ways to go, fees to pay, etc. and are still graciously accepting donations. If anyone wants to contact us or donate funds, you can go to Okili's WebPages at: http://okili.chipin.com/. Also feel free to email us at sabrinajk@comcast.net.
Update for June 20, 2009
I know It's been a while since I made any updates. But I must state immediately the GOOD NEWS, in detail, that Okili has come home, and it was a surprise to us too! There was no planning. All of a sudden, on this last Thursday, July 16, he called me urgently asking if he should sign a form stating that he would be released. It so happened I was on the other line with my attorney; she said "yes! Have him sign it! " Now he is FREE and able to fight the case from home; this is much easier on us.
Part of the reason we've not kept up with the updates is that we've been going through changing attorneys which felt like a sensitive issue and did not want to talk about that online. Now we are working with an attorney here in CA who is very caring and concerned about his case and working very hard. We now feel confident that our case will be resolved in our favor, being as he's been released from the detention facility. The fight still continues for my husband's case, finally back by my side. I have been on an adrenalin rushed emotional rollercoaster ride of fear for his safety and of being deported.
Okili and I are both resting a bit after having been apart for the last 3 months; as a family we are just so happy to be back together! But we are also very ready to plan for a huge "continue the battle" fund raiser and welcome home party with live music, etc. just like the Free Okili event. We actually reserved a date today at the Sebastopol Community Center for August 28, 2009.
Please, we need your help again for this big welcome home event, to finish his case properly. Again, thank you to everyone's continued support from the beginning to the end. I ask that you do not give up on us, as the fight still continues on, but now it should be just a little bit easier for us all...kind of like a few heavyweights just joined our side of the tug of war rope; so don't leave our sides! The fun times are just beginning and you don't want to miss out!
SILENT AUCTION
The Silent Auction at FREE OKILI was a success and we think it's a good idea to have another one. Ruth Richards handled the last Auction completely and absolutely 100%, from coordinating all the items, to sitting in the auction room the entire night of the event, to finally collecting most of the money for all the sold items. I am extremely thankful to this and I know it was a lot of work so I'm sure she will either want more help this time or maybe another team of auctioneers would like to take over this time?
FOOD, BEER, and WINE
Again there will be a nice dinner available and a Beer and Wine bar. We will need donations for Food and Drink. Any Donations in this area will greatly be appreciated. At the Free Okili event we had the amazing help of Bruce Rhodes on the BBQ, and a ton of volunteers in the Kitchen, lead by Taylor Webb, chopping and prepping and cutting and slicing. At the last minute Chai Baba Chai recued us with his expert ability to cook a HUGE pot of beans and to provide his wonderful Chai. Also we got the gratefully needed cooking pans, etc, and other items for the kitchen from Shani Rifati of Voices of Roma. We will need all this type of help again, so anyone who is willing to step forward once again, or for the first time, please do.
HELP NEEDED IN ALL AREAS
If you would like to help and have expertise in an area, please let us know...drop us a line. Thanks so much! We too will keep you informed where areas of help are really needed as time progresses.
Update for June 6, 2009
Finally I spoke with our Lawyer, yesterday, so I'm feeling a little relieved about that. Basically he says that due to the nature of the forms he has filed (I-290B - application for class membership in NWIRP vs USCIS and the I-130 application for alien relative) he will not get an actual response back from their respective departments for at least a month. When he gets them back, actually written acknowledgment by USCIS(new name of INS) that they have received those forms, he will then file a motion to reopen his case; the deportation case based on the overstay of student visa. He says that Okili then is actually eligible for adjustment of status (which is what the I-130 does, adjust his status to that of a family member to American citizens.) Meanwhile, while this case is being reopened we should also be under the protection of the pending application for the Amnesty membership application, which is supposed to temporarily stop any deportation. At the time he files the motion to reopen he would also file a request for a bond hearing. If he gets a bond he could get out of the detention facility as soon as in 2 months from now, but not sooner. When he gets out he will be able to continue the fight home. There's a chance he may have to fight everything from AZ which could take a lot longer.
We hope he won't have to stay much longer than the two months as his treatment there, since he was downgraded to a less desirable housing building (after they brought him back from the airport when they almost deported him), has not been so great. He's a little afraid to tell me too much about the treatment as they are listening in on the phones and he doesn't want more retaliation. He's afraid if I call to complain they may do more to him as well. I know that he's wearing shoes too small, is sharing a room with another inmate with a snoring disorder, was not able to get things he'd purchased prior to going to the airport back from the building he previously stayed, that had nicer employees, etc. (toothpaste, lotion, razor, food, etc). He wouldn't tell me everything and says he just wants the lawyer to visit him so that he can tell him all in person. The lawyer says he may have some connections in there that can help make things easier on Okili. We'll see, I hope so.
This is all very complicated and hard for everyone including me, to understand how it all works - there's no real paved road to follow here.
I also got a call from Melissa Redezno in Mike Thompson's office asking how his case is going, which was very nice of her. She wants to be kept informed.
I had a second interview with Ida Johnson on her Santa Rosa Media Center TV program "What's Hot" if anyone got a chance to see it. It may replay if you check their schedule.
Okili would like letters of Affidavit. Basically that's a one page letter of your support for him addressed to whom it may concern. I was thinking you could send letters directly to the lawyer and email them to me so I can print them and mail them to Okili.
Here's the Lawyer's address:
Law office of Richard LaPaglia
515 N. Main Street
Eloy, AZ 85231
Thanks so much for your help to us!
Update for May 31, 2009
Just want everyone to know that Okili is still in the US!. I am waiting to hear back from our lawyer whom I left several messages for last week. I'm still pretty exhausted from the whole fundraiser organizing and all of the nail biting nerve racking things that happened w/ Okili almost being deported and what not. But I've gotten several calls and emails from folks wanting an update.
The last thing I did, after the bond hearing was cancelled from May 20, when they almost deported Okili right then and there, was speak w/ Mike Thompson's office and complete an I-130 which is an application for Alien Relative (he's my relative as a spouse, and the kids relative as their father). Also, the lawyer sent off the application for the class action law suit membership to the correct address. For the last week I've been trying to contact the lawyer to confirm that the application was received at the correct address, and to see what our next plan is for a hearing. I assume he's just not contacted me because he's still formulating and researching the correct plan. I just wish he'd let me know, though.
Even though we had a successful fundraiser, this is NOT OVER YET! Right now I'm feeling like we could raise all the money in the world, and these ICE people still have the keys. I feel that if we can just get in front of a judge, things will be ok. But some people say getting him out is just the beginning of a long and expensive fight ahead of us. We just don't know how long it will all take and how much it will all cost, but it is worth it to keep the fight up right now vs. having him deported and banned from the country for minimum 10 years!
THANK YOU TO US CONGRESSMAN MIKE THOMPSON'S OFFICE As many of you know it was a BIG THANK YOU to US Congressman Mike Thompson's Napa office for his staff member Melissa Rodezno actually calling the ICE office in Eloy, AZ and requesting them to actually give her the date of his deportation. I believe they take a request like that from a Congressman's office very seriously, and thus looked more closely at his case and saw that he may indeed be a member of the Class action law suit that they did not want to recognize. They had stated to Ms. Rodezno that he would not be deported any time soon because of the class action law suit. To read a little more of what happened with Mike Thompson's office and the situation that lead up to it, see the updates below for May 20-24. If anyone wants to help by sending Mike Thompson thank you letters, here is his address/contact info:
MIKE THOMPSON'S NAPA DISTRICT OFFICE
1040 Main Street, Suite 101
Napa, CA 94559
Phone: (707) 226-9898
Fax: (707) 251-9800
If you want to EMAIL him, here is the link to his email page: http://mikethompson.house.gov/contact/email.shtml
How is Okili doing?
Well, at least he's still here, but he is not happy. It's starting to wear on him. All of you know what a happy and joyful person he is, and in the beginning he was laughing on the phone telling me how he was making other inmates laugh in the place; some people told him they hadn't laughed in weeks, and he was making them laugh. But now, it's getting to wear on Okili.
After he was brought back to the detention center from the Airport, when he was almost deported, it seems the guards in the detention facility were ready to "get him back" revengefully somehow. Upon coming back, only a few hours later, and giving him back his prison clothes, they issued him shoes that were too small. When he told them the shoes didn't fit, they said he'd have to wait at least two weeks before they could get him shoes that fit. Then they put a new partner in his cell that snored super loud all night long. They also do other things to make life harder on you in there. He was afraid of having me complain about the treatment because he thought they could make it worse somehow.
If anyone wants to write to Okili, here is his address:
Eloy Detention Center
Delta Building
Henri Roger Nguebari
#A25370867
1705 E. Hanna Rd.
Eloy, AZ 85231
If anyone wants to send Okili money on his books to buy extra food, toothbrushes or other toiletries, phone cards, etc. you can send him money via payments at:
Western Union Quick Collect
Pay to: Corrections Corp. of America
State: TN
Code City: Trust CCA
Senders Account #: 1358214NGUEBARI (must be all CAPS here)
(Don't worry about it saying State: TN, even though he's in AZ - this is how it's done).
STILL GETTING THE WORD OUT AND WANT TO STAY PUBLIC
Please continue to write Congress people, i.e. Mike Thompson and Lynn Woolsey. Even though I'd not gotten a great response initially from her office, there are some others trying to get through to her office in a different way.
Also, news, and letters to the editors. Please continue to write letters to the editor. I'm almost ready for a follow up story with the Press Democrat or anyone else just as soon as I know our new plan of action from the lawyer. I'll be keeping everyone informed as things progress here. If anyone does not have links to radio or news articles that they'd like to see, let me know.
Thanks, Love, Sabrina
Update for May 24, 2009
On Friday, May 22, '09 we held the FREE OKILI fundraiser which was a tremendous success. We managed to clear (NET) a little over $10,000 after all expenses, which gives us a little security as far as the costs for Legal fees go (I've already spent $4000 prior to raising this money). I'd say there were at least 300 people in there (capacity is 400), and the entertainment, the silent auction, and the dinner were all awesome. Please see the fundraiser page for more details and big heartfelt thank yous.
US Senator Mike Thompson's staff are my Heroes: I told a wonderful turn out of people on Friday night (May 22, '09) at FREE OKILI how my good and long time family friend Marylyn Motherbear (aka Marylyn Brandon / Marylyn Scott) had had the connection with a friend in US Senator Mike Thompsons office up in Humboldt, (Heidi) whom I spoke to and told the whole story to who immediately had Melissa Rodezno in Mike Thompsons Napa office call me and listen to the whole story; and, without ANY red tape (oh, you've gotta fill out this form, etc) just asked for Okili's full name, Alien Reg # , and where he was being held. Friday AM she called the ICE Congressional contact number in Eloy, AZ and asked them about his case. They first told her that he was on a final order of deportation and that they'd never heard of the class action law suit he qualifies for and were not recognizing it. She then proceeded to demand (which a Congressional office has the right to do and not me or the lawyer) when they exactly plan to deport him, i.e. a date. They got back to her by that afternoon with an answer. I believe because of the fact that it was a Congressional office calling they thought twice about just giving a deportation date, and told her he wasn't going anywhere anytime soon, because they now see that they
must take a closer look at the Class Action law suit. Thank God/dess! Thus, I do believe the deportation has been interrupted! Yay! (knock on wood). THANK YOU MIKE THOMPSONS OFFICE!
What this means is that the lawyer will be able to ask for a hearing again, which he probably will be able to get by the first week of June. Then he will not only be asking to have deportation proceedings dismissed and for a bail bond, but also will be presenting our I-130 application for spousal relative (by me) so that hopefully our family will be recognized! I swear, the laws in the new Homeland Security Dept. of US CITIZENSHIP and IMMIGRATION SERVICES have laws that are like giant Boulders in an avalanche: Each boulder, like the steps and forms we must fill along the way, must be lifted with great effort, in order to get to, or even be able to see the beautiful jewels beneath (our family, etc). I'll keep you tuned in on this.
Regarding Dianne Feinstein's office: I still did not get an actual phone call that I know of for sure from Feinstein's Martha Flores. But I did get a letter from her yesterday stating that the Senator's office will NOT be able to intervene in my husbands case because of his pending final order of removal (deportation). This is a bunch of crap and I intend to respond; letting them know that all Senator Mike Thompson's office had to do was make a phone call inquiring about the dates of intent to remove my husband, and it's getting them to take our case more seriously, and hold back the deportation from taking place anytime soon. THANK YOU MIKE THOMPSONS OFFICE!
Feinstein's office commented in their letter that "Attempts to reach [me] by phone..." were "unsuccessful". I received NO messages, and the number I have rolls over to my cell phone. There was ONE call that came in from an "unknown" number while I was on the air interviewing with Milo (John Chapman) on KGGV; the phone was ringing loudly through the airwaves, and I did not know how to turn it off in that moment. I quickly picked it up to stop the ringing and said to someone quickly " Can't talk now, call me back" and hung up. I did hear a woman say "Hello?". I do not know who it was, they did not call back, and it could have been Martha Flores, for all I know.
Update for May 22, 2009 Today we pray that nothing happens to Okili, as the attorney on the other side who actually stopped the deportation on Wed. is not in his office today, the day he said everything should be filed by. The lawyers have everything filed to the correct address now, but given the remote location that Eloy is, even overnight mail gets to P.O. boxes tomorrow, Sat, and not today. They've given everything to the ICE Detention facility so that they know it's all been sent timely, but all we can do is just pray that events happen the way we want, and no deportation happens.
Yesterday I found a really nice and helpful person in Mike Thompsons office, thanks to the persistence of my good friend Marylyn Motherbear (aka Marylyn Brandon or Marylyn Scott) who spoke w/ someone in Mike Thompson's office. The short of the long is that I've got an advocate in Mike Thompsons Napa office, Melissa Rodezno who is calling on the ICE Deportation people in Eloy, AZ. She put a message in this AM and is calling again right now because she's not heard back from them yet. She seems very helpful, unlike the other Congressional offices. I've been through no red tape to have her make these calls - i.e. Barbara Boxer's office wanted a signed statement from Okili to even look at the case, and Dianne Feinstein's person still has not called me back after 3 weeks of harassing them also w/ other constituents calling and faxing, etc.
Here is a link (go down to May 21) to a recent KRCB interview I did with Bruce Robinson and a really great press release from Big Man (Elbert Howard,) one of the original founding members of the Black Panther movement, and also the president of PACH (Police Accountability Clinic and Helpline).
Update for May 21, 2009 It turns out the Attorneys had actually filed the application for the class action law suit related to the Amnesty to the wrong address! (It's an easy human error, as EVERY SINGLE application filed to the Immigration offices must go to different addresses all over the United States in order to process correctly). Okili was actually in chains and at the AZ Airport when they stopped the deportation yesterday. Our lawyer had been pleading w/ one of the Govmt. Attorneys in the Eloy Detention Facility and got the guy to allow them (our atty.) until this Friday to have the application for the class action suit filed at the correct address. They thus called Okili back to the Detention Facility from the AZ airport. Now we bite our nails in prayer that they get it filed to the right address and on time. Meanwhile some jerks in the detention center, are all like
"ok, your leaving Friday buddy". He's worried they'll try to take him first thing in the AM or something. The lawyers have to mail the documents overnight to a Chicago, Ill. address and then show the prison proof of delivery or something by Friday. They are mailing this AM, because yesterday it was too late to mail by the time everything was stopped and they'd spoken to that other atty., etc.
The only place I know to protest is:
Dianne Feinstein's office in SF by email or fax # 415 -393-0710 in regards to Henri Roger Nguebari, Alien Reg. #'s A26370867, and A092669962. He has a case filed with them that is being handled by Martha Flores in that office.
Just demand that it is wrong for them to take him away from his family of American born citizens (two natural children born here aged 17 and 21) and his natural born wife of 22 years. You might comment that you've read about it in your local News Paper (The PD) and are in shock, and that you heard it also on the radio and local access TV station up here in Sonoma County, (Santa Rosa). We want them to be aware that people know about this and are outraged.
Update for May 20, 2009 and Press Democrat article
Here is a link to the the Press Democrat article.
This morning I received shocking news that they may illegally deport Okili even though we filed his membership in the class action law suit in a timely fashion which is in and of itself supposed to stop any deportation (It states it very clearly that class members cannot be deported while under the application process). The lawyer says the government is opening themselves up to a major law suit if they do deport him.
Okili called me urgently notifying me that they were deporting him now. The lawyer says he does not have hope that they will not deport him, but that it is definitely illegal for them to deport him at this point. They did not even get to have the hearing; it was about to start when guards came into the court room to whisk Okili away. Then Okili called me urgently on a 1 minute complimentary call to say they are deporting him now. What the fuck! I am so upset and beside myself. It makes no sense. The lawyer is urgently filing a different kind of stay of deportation in the hopes of stopping them, but it seems they are real idiots in there not reading the law.
The Fund raiser on Friday May 22, of course will still go on!
Update for May 12, 2009
As of today I have VERY good NEWS and am so happy and relieved to say that my husband's Deportation has been stopped in it's tracks, thanks to the timely filing of papers by the lawyers we found, Richard La Paglia in Eloy, AZ. Richard and his lawyer wife Mary took on our case, fully researching the Class Action Law Suit I mentioned last time called: NORTHWEST IMMIGRANT RIGHTS PROJECT, ET AL (PLAINTIFFS) VS. U.S. CITIZENSHIP AND IMMIGRATION SERVICES, ET AL. (DEFENDANTS), including contacting the Attorney's in Seattle who authored it (web site www.ghp-law.net). Our current lawyer is now seeking the Bond Hearing which should happen as soon as this week. We don't know how much appealing it will take for my husband to get out on bail bond but that is the next step in the appealprocess so that we can bring him home to continue this "must win" battle from here in CA and not in that privately owned AZ detention facility.
The goal is to move the case back to SF where we will need to continue with another local attorney finally applying through our family and marriage (the I-130 application) and simultaneously wave his other immigration issues from 25 years ago prior to our marriage. We do not know how expensive the case can get, due to the unknown nature of appeals, etc. We've heard from friends of complicated cases getting as expensive as $30,000 and beyond, and we PRAY that this does not get to this point or anywhere close!
But once we have the case moved back here we will urgently need tons of help to attract Congressional or other services so that if we work with a lawyer some of the cost could be off set by this. We of course have already started this attraction in motion through all of the publicity we are displaying, including all of the letters being written by many of you to Dianne Feinstein, Barbara Boxer, Lynn Woolsey, and the Letter to the Editor. And, we have been told by several reputable attorneys that we now have much stronger merits in our favor having 3 American Citizens (myself and two kids together over 20 years) to fight for our husband /father person and that his immigration complications of his past should be waved much more easily now.
Imagine, not only will my husband be free to leave this country to visit his family abroad without the fear of not being able to return, but my kids and I will also be free to visit, travel, and live anywhere we want with my husband/their father freely.
Publicity Thankfully I have already interviewed w/ Mary Moore on KBBF in the northbay, and w/ Emmanuel Nado on KKUP in the southbay, and am about to do an interview on Ch. 30 local Media Center w/ Ida Johnson to be aired next Monday. I have also been speaking with Bleys Rose about an article he intends to do in the Press Democrat shortly, and have just been contacted by Lindsay Pyle of the North Bay Bohemian to do a story as well. A banner will be posted on WaccoBB.net as well. I am open to other interviews, etc. I have to say thank you, thank you, thank you for everyone staying in touch with one another and taking our family's situation seriously. We are not done yet. And still have quite a battle (but winning now) ahead of us.
Raising money through renting our back house/covers part of the mortgage while hubby gone Renting the backhouse will about cut the current mortgage in half; my wine sales income has been really squelched by this outcry I've needed to make to secure my family's unity. We have a back granny unit /studio that has a person agreeing to rent it at the beginning of June.
The place has not been rented in a few years because it needs a little work. Most of the hard stuff is done,(thankfully, some major plumbing, hole covering, and deep cleaning was already done by our caring and helpful friend Paul Lavender). But we still need a little help fixing some kitchen drawers/cabinets, and securing some issues w/ the hot water back there (it has a water heater that needs proper venting / ventilation to work properly. Also the place needs a new/used but working refrigerator, and the gas stove vented. We also need a dump run or two,and eventual help painting the exterior (interior done).
Anyone able to help on this? If you were wanting to help us and have some skills in these areas, it would be, "oh, so highly and graciously appreciated!".
Future Events We hope and pray for a very successful event on May 22, but we really have NO IDEA what legal funds we will end up needing to pay down the road. We may need to call on other folks for a different type of fund raiser in the future. Some people have offered to help as entertainers, yard sale holders, or with other types of fundraising events that have not been able to manifest yet. If you are unable to help now or on May 22, please keep it in your hearts, what ever you intend to share with us in the ways of fundraising, because we may still really need your help in the future.
Thank you My family and I continue to thank everyone so much for their help. Last update I tried to list some people who came to mind, and still have not gotten the chance to properly list them all. Again, please forgive me if I've not mentioned your name. This is a task I do intend to publically undertake at some point, and the only names I won't have are those who may have donated money automatically into my account with no name attached, or those of who's full name I don't know (I've always been bad w/ last names).
Update for May 6, 2009
I've deposited the Attorney's retainer of $1500 of which he will need the other $1500 in a few days or so ($3000). They are supposed to be faxing me documents to sign today, and preparing documents for Okili to sign when they meet with him at 1:00 PM. Also they will be filing the necessary waiver of deportation today, with good cause to reopen his case which is his membership to the class action suit. We have no idea of appeals happening, but we are confident this is a pretty clear good reasoning to open his files. Once those papers are actually filed with ICE I will feel great relief that the deportation will be stopped in its tracks for the time being.
Thank You
Thank you for everyone's advise and recommendations for lawyers, agencies, people who can help, etc. thus far. If I've not been able to utilize some of these venues yet, though they may still play an integral part in the future, once we get him out and back to fight this in CA. Several of the recommendations I've received have already played a very important roll in helping me to make the final decisions I've made as to regards the route we are currently taking. Also, thank you SO much for all of the calls and emails for concern about this, and the highly needed donations for money that have come through.
Also, a special thanks to my friends Paul Lavender and Erin Anderson, whom I did not get a chance to thank yet - who were right there the first weekend after the ICE kidnapping took place, providing the food for an outstanding dinner that they cooked and served (IN THE TRUE SPIRIT OF OKILI) to about 15 people who came to my house concerned and offering support. Also a huge thankyou to Michelle Jensen and Carl (sorry don't have his last name!) who opened there home the next day for people to come and offer their support. They provided also a wonderful BBQ for folks. It was VERY nice of them.
I also want to make a very special thank you to all of the people who've been helping and donating money. Here's a partial list of big helpers both physically, morally, and financially; eventually I'll print a list of all names collected (please no preference given to names listed first, just as they come to mind, and this is not all). Thanks to Kris freewoman, Andrea Karolle, Miles Mendenhall, Deb Dobish, Devin Nganga, Delphine (Inga President), Lokoko Kitenza, Victor and Cathy Tetteh, Yao Hihette, Ernest, Victor Hall, Victoria Strowbridge, Mary Moore, Emmanuel Nado, Penny Nichols, Chanda Zanga, Nancy and Thomas Boukaka, Farida Fox, Erin Anderson, Noelle Marshall and Chris, Michelle Jensen, Mapanda Mwela, Fungula, Robin Krauss, Lex Krauss, Amadou Camara, Gideon Bendele, Miejo, and many many more that I will eventually try to list everyone in another email when time permits.
THIS IS NOT OVER YET
Although I am relieved to have finally made the decisions we've made, and finally able to take some timely action, please keep us at the front of your minds and be watching and ready to help with what may happen next. I still feel there are great unknowns and still really need to feel the communities support behind me at my back.
Our Families Health
OKili is nervous about getting something filed, but other than that he's in good spirits and not being mistreated in the facility other than being served the most bland tasteless food you can imagine. Once the deportation is stayed, he says he doesn't mind staying in his little detox environment there if he has to for a little while before we can actually get him out.
I have been unable to work in my job much for the last 12 business days due to needing to be on the phone/email nearly non stop to get something done with the right decision, and timely. Thanks to many friends, I've been reminded to stop to eat, taken out to eat, cooked for, and invited over to eat. It's been hard to focus on eating or take a walk on occasion but I must. Once the papers are all signed today, I will be able to focus on work again. Also I've had to try to stay as strong as I can for my kids (which unfortunately they've seen me break down a few times in all this).
My kids are worried, especially it's effected my 17 year old boy Olembe. Sometimes his stomach just does not feel good over all this. And, he's too old to keep it all private from him - yet he's still young enough to feel a lot of stress with worrying about if he's going to need to move to France and away from his life here to be with his Dad, or knowing how expensive it is to visit back and forth. He starts saying things like, "Mom, I've got to get a job", and I'm trying to tell him not to worry, he's a kid, it's all going to work out, go to school, etc.
Update for April 30, 2009 - Okili and Family
Okili’s Condition and Spirits
The good news is that Okili is getting a bit of a health work out over there. In the past he’s had a bit of high blood pressure, and now he’s exercising regularly, (A LOT more than here home), gets no beer, and now his blood pressure has actually gone down! The only thing he says is the food situation sucks. Breakfast is at 5:00AM, which he misses because he says it’s total junk. He eats lunch at Noon, and dinner at 4:00Pm . By 8:00 Pm he’s quite hungry and they go to bed at 10:15 Pm. Most people are eating things they purchase in some Canteen place at about 8:00, but Okili needs money on the books for that. He’s been borrowing from people their food they’ve purchased, and he’s feeling a little ashamed not to have his own money on the books. This money on the books also helps him make needed collect phone calls (ridiculous charges: $3.50 for 1st minute, .45 each additional, and only 15 min allowed per call). Go to the How Can I Help page if you’d like to put money on his books.
Okili’s wife and childrens’ Condition and Spirits
When Okili was first picked up by the ICE last Monday, we spent pretty much a full week morning and night on the phone, on the computer quite stressed, crying and trying to stay strong and grounded. I, Sabrina was pretty much not able to focus on my wine sales job. It was too hard to focus on selling wine with a smile on my face while there is so much at hand to urgently take care of. I’ve been and still am exhausted; and just now, that we have a plan to hopefully stop the deportation in time, I feel slight relief, but not till it’s done. Today for the first time since Monday April 20, ’09 I sat down for two hours to try to work In the wine job (not easy, but a MUST).
The kids too have been upset, but strong. Abanya’s also got a lot going on in her life with trying to move out of a house, and maybe here home for a while as she’s transitioning. Olembe has been quite strong, but has also been effected when all these people ask him so many questions about his Dad “ why was he illegal, why was your Dad picked up”, etc. I told him to just tell people to ask me. All he needs is love and support. It’s quite disturbing, as a kid, to think your Dad may never come back here again, even if you can go there (it’s far away, another culture and language).
WE want to go to France or Congo, but not under these conditions of family separation.
